In this tutorial, I'll teach you how to change hair color using Photoshop CS4. This is an easy and fun tutorial and result should give you something similar to this:

Open the image that you want to use. For best results you should try to get high resolution picture. This tutorial depends greatly on the selection you make, so be careful and accurate.
I opened the image I'm going to use here and now I'll select the part of the hair I want to color. There are many tools that can be used here such as the Selection tool, Magnetic Lasso Tool, Lasso Tool, and Quick Selection Tool. But the most accurate selection is the Quick Mask. Press Q to go to quick mask mode. With a soft black brush select the part of the hair you want to color. The soft brush makes the edges of the selection softer and thus better results. Here's my selection:

In Quick Mask mode, your selection is shown in red. If you accidently selected the wrong part, switch to the white brush and go over the parts you want to remove. To add again to the selection choose Black.
Now press "Q" again to get out of Quick mask mode. Click Ctrl+J to create a new layer out of the selection.

With the new layer selected go to, Image, Adjustments then choose Hue/Saturation or Click Ctrl+U to bring up the Hue/Saturation Options.
Play around with the values until you get the result you're looking for.

Notice that I have Colorize selected at the bottom above Preview. This way, whatever color I select in the "Hue" bar, it's the color that's going to be applied.
Another thing you can do is, play with the layer modes and opacity as well.

There's another tool that can be used to change color which is the Variations. Again, I'll make another selection in the image. This time, I'll add just a highlight and won't select the entire hair. Go to the Quick Mask mode and make your selection. After you're done, copy the selection by clicking Ctrl+J.
Go to Image, Adjustments, and this time, choose Variations.

Here at the top, you got the original and the current pick is the final result after you add the colors, like before and after image. Go ahead and play around with the colors. On the right, you got the options, Lighter and Darker.
Here's what my image looks like after playing a while with these values.

Now, as you can see, this is totally unrealistic and it's not good. If you get a result like this, you have to do some more tweaking using the layer modes and the opacity.

There you go. You got different ways to change hair color and many options using layer modes. Have fun!

Processing, please wait ...
