In this tutorial we’re going to create a photo using pieces of torn paper. Really nice effect.

Step 1

Start by opening a photo that you like or you can use mine.

With the Pen Tool make a selection all around the girl. If you are not used to working with the pen tool you can just select the girl with any selection tool you want - Magic Wand, Lasso Tool, etc

I choose the pen tool because is really accurate. Hit Ctrl + Enter to convert this vector into a selection and copy the girl.

Step 2

In a new document paste the girl.

Now, go to Image > Adjustments > Hue-Saturation

Set these values so we turn the image to a Grayscale.

Saturation: -100 and Lightness: +5

Step 3

Then let’s go to Filter > Artistic > Cutout

Set these values:

Number of levels: 5 / Edge Simplicity: 0 / Edge Fidelity: 3

Here’s what we got:

Step 4

Now we need some pieces of paper so this tutorial makes sense.

We open this image of a piece of paper:

With the Magic Wand Tool (or any selection tool that you like) let’s cut the piece and paste it on the document we were working.

Step 5

Scale it down and just place it anywhere you want. Make sure is above the girl. Now duplicate the layer Ctrl + J and cover another part of the girl. You can rotate them, scale them, anything you want. Just cover the girl with the pieces of paper like this:

Step 6

Continue duplicating until you get something like this image:

Step 7

Click on the girl layer and move it to the top of the layers panel.

As we see now, the image of the girl is a little grey and for the effect we want to achieve we need more contrast.

Go to Image > Adjustment > Brightness and Contrast and set these values:

Step 8

And now, just set the blending mode of that layer to Overlay.

You’ll get something like this:

Step 9

Last thing left to do is paste a torn paper background. Open this image:

Select all (Ctrl + A) and paste it on the document you were working.

Result

And we’re finished! Look at the final result. Pretty cool, huh?

Owesome post. Thanks for help! Good luck!

I think the girl takes away from the piece. I like the concept, but the girl and the mirror behind her head just bug me.

Great steps and tutorial. Regardless of how you like the image, the tutorial explains the process well.

Great tutorial! I have developed a site dedicated to collage and mixed media art. There is some cool stuff on there. You can check it out at http://www.kohlage.com.
